About Us

A Guide to Running, Competition, and Fun!
I've never really run much (or maybe not at all)!
No problem.  Each year, there are new members to the team that either have not run much before, or ever.  Coaches Abing and Torvi will have you in shape and learning to pace yourself before you can believe it!  Coaches and the more experienced runners will help you and have you running in no time!

Why Cross Country?
Why not?  Cross Country is a great sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime.  No one is cut from the team; all levels of ability are welcomed (it's ok to come without experience).  It provides great cross-training to keep you in shape for other sports.  You get a total body workout, friends and camaraderie you can enjoy for a lifetime.

When and where do we practice?
The season starts Monday, August 11th and ends with the state meet Saturday, November 1st.  The season starts right before the beginning of school.  We practice everyday before the first day of school starts usually at 9am and 4pm.  Once school starts, we practice daily from 2:45 to 4:30PM.  The team is fortunate to have some great training spots close to school, but we also carpool to some fun running spots.

How much will it cost?
The cost to join Cross Country is $180 (10th-12th grade) or $155 (7th-9th grade).  If you cannot afford the activity fee, you have a couple options.  Those that are on free and reduced lunch programs can have the fee waived.  Families can also apply for scholarships, available through a local foundation, to cover the cost.  Call or E-mail the coach if you need any information.

What equipment will I need?
One of the other great things about running is that you don't need a lot of equipment.  The largest cost is a pair of good running shoes and a pair of racing spikes, which can cost anywhere from $50 - over $100.

Will I get to compete right away?
In some varsity sports only the very best athletes get to compete, and some athletes even get cut from the team.  Cross Country is not like that.  With the exception of the Roy Griak Invitational, all team members get to race in all meets.  Practices and meets are coed; however, boys compete with boys, and girls compete with girls in the events.

Is it all just racing?
Racing is a big focus, but Cross Country offers a ton of fun as well: Trainging camp, fun practices, doughnut and ice cream runs, new friends, out-of-town meets, and carbo-loads at team member's houses.

Great competition in a lifelong sport with great people.
